Monthly Tax Memo - Mar 2024

Hi there,

Happy March! Feeling grateful there was an extra day in February this year? Now, here’s your Monthly Tax Memo.

In today’s newsletter:

  • Tax season tips
  • New scams warning
  • Security reminder

A few reminders for tax season

  • Take time for yourself (and make sure to give time to employees too).
  • Don’t be the cheapest – get paid for your value.
  • You are in “high demand” – be selective on which clients you retain and new ones you accept.
  • Communicate with your staff to get their feedback and check in regularly.
  • Stay in the know!
    • Make sure you’re keeping an eye on IRS news.
    • Listen in to episodes of the Federal Tax Updates podcast.
    • Update notification settings on any tax news tools you may use. Our offices rely on Checkpoint.
  • Extensions are ok!
  • Several states have extended due dates because of disasters. Check the Tax Relief in Disaster Situations page on the IRS website to see if your state has been impacted.

    IRS warns of new scams

    • New Client Email Scam: Cybercriminals pose as potential clients seeking help with their taxes, using emails to try obtaining sensitive information or gain access to tax professionals' client data.
    • EFIN Scam: Scammers pose as a tax software provider and email the tax professional with a request to provide their EFIN information by fax.
    • If you believe you’ve received something that looks suspicious:
      • Don’t respond to the email or click on anything in the email that looks odd.
      • Report scams or suspected fraud activity!
      • Check the IRS website for announcements regarding new scams.

      Protecting Your EFIN & PTIN

      • To protect against fraud, the IRS recommends monitoring your accounts to verify that you filed the number of returns shown under your PTIN and EFIN.
        • PTIN: Log into your PTIN account, then select the "Returns per PTIN" tile.
        • EFIN: Log into your e-Services account to access your e-file information.
      • Report any misuse of EFIN & PTIN to the IRS using the contact info located on their website.

NOTE: If you haven’t done so, you need to implement a written information security plan. Tax preparers are required by law to have one in place. The AICPA and IRS have templates if you need something quickly.
